NSW: Long-haul travellers most at risk from DVT

Christmas holiday travellers are being warned to guard against deep vein thrombosiswhen flying to holiday destinations.

Leading vascular surgeon Professor REGINALD LORD says long-haul travellers should beparticularly cautious.

DVT is the second most common cause of death in air travellers.

It occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein and can lead to pulmonary embolism, with the clot travelling through the bloodstream to the lungs.

Professor LORD, from Sydney's St Vincent's Hospital, says those most at risk are travellerson flights more than 12 hours long.

He says long-haul travellers should wear compression stockings, exercise their legsas much as possible, avoid excessive amounts of alcohol and drink plenty of water to avoiddehydration in a bid to minimise the risk of DVT.
